As you noticed, the app store requires you to sign onto your apple account (even if the app itself doesn't cost any money). I don't particularly like this approach, but it's the way Apple has designed it, and as long as you play by their rules (i.e. if the phone isn't jailbroken), you're going to need an apple ID to download apps.

If you give credit card information to apple, their privacy policy (like most corporations) states that they'll confidentially guard it. Whereas it might be risky to give your credit card info to some unknown website, you can generally trust that Apple won't do anything malicious with the card. The only real threat is that sometimes hackers are able to get into company databases (see the recent successful hacking attempts against companies like Sony).

If you don't want to give out credit card info, you might be able to use one of those temporary card numbers that some credit card companies offer ("secure online number" or whatever, for one-time online transactions).

apple id is linked with itunes and the app store... they ask for your credit card to make the process of buying stuff more easy. unless you actually buy something that cost money Nothing will be charged to your credit card. without the card you wont be able to download anything from the app store. so go ahead, if you dont buy they wont charge!!!
