What does “SEE ATTENDANT” mean when paying at the gas pump?

Due to the recession, I have fallen over 5 months behind in my “CitiBank” credit card payments, however I have always kept my two “Citi” gas cards paid on time, whereas I have been unable to pay 5 other “Citi” non-gas credit cards for over 5 months. Yet when I was about 2 months behind on the 5 other “Citi” non-gas cards, “Citi” drastically reduced my credit lines on both gas cards, yet they never deactivated the two gas cards. Yet whenever I have checked online to see my available credit on both gas cards, the first card has in available credit, and the second card has 0 in available credit. When I telephoned the customer service number on each of the two gas cards on two separate occasions (after getting the “SEE ATTENDANT” message on the display on the gas pump), the automated phone system is telling me also that I have the available credit on each gas card. Yet whenever I try to use my credit card at the gas pump “with the pay at the pump” option, neither card will work, and the display on the pump say’s “SEE ATTENDANT”. Yet for the record, all 7 of my Citi accounts are processed at different locations and there is a separate customer service number for each card, yet since all the cards belong to “Citi”, I am sure that there are notifications on all accounts that I am past due on 5 of the “Citi” accounts.

Yet knowing how my credit history had gotten messed up due to the recession and the interest rates that have been jacked-up over the past year, and my no longer being able to pay those 5 other credit cards at the moment, I am just worried that if I actually go see the attendant in the store, they just may confiscate my credit card and tell me that “Citi” gave them orders to confiscate my card due to my non-payment of the other 5 cards, as I am sure they might get a notification on their cash register computer system, for whenever I try to use my card and I come in to see the attendant, etc. etc. etc.. So I do not want to be embarrassed if this might happen, if I go see the attendant.

Yet I was just wondering to those of you that this has already happened to, when you get the “SEE ATTENDANT” message on the gas pump screen when using a gas card and then went inside the shop, what happened to you?
Thanks Everyone for your contributions. I appreciate the help, suggestions, and advice. Based on what you all have collectively shared, at least I now will feel more confident to go see the attendant, to see what happens. Yet with my new bad credit problems, I just did not want it to be an embarrassing issue to deal with while talking with the attendant. So based on what was shared by you all thus far, it sounds like my talking with the attendant will not be as bad or embarrassing of an issue as I originally thought.
