i dont think local places would except travelers cheques, what i would do is i would take out 500 euros but keep it very safe. also if you have a debit card you should take it with you but call the bank first saying your travelling abroad, they will charge you interest though. i would only bring my phone with me if i really need it, after you'll be with your family, also while i was in france my phone lost network for 3 days so i couldnt recieve or make calls. i think your best option is just taking money with you but carry money you need, the rest leave with your family.

Traveler's cheques are not outdated and they are the best way to carry large sums of money.

Check out the American Express web site I attached. It will explain Traveler's cheques to you in detail. Where to buy, how to use and such.

As for your cell. You can call Verizon and ask them about international travel and if it sounds too complicated I'd just ditch the phone.

I agree with Roxy, traveller cheques is the best way to get money abroad if you don't have credit cards, if you lose them or have them stolen you will be reimbursed by the insurance, and it is far from outdated. I have credit cards but still travel with one or two traveller cheque just in case.
