I agree. Depending on the county the very things you listed are counted (unless you're a pregnant woman applying for Medicaid only).
I see no problem with people that need it applying for assistance, but if you're driving a brand new car chatting on your iPhone on your way home to watch the newest episode of True Blood then I have an issue with my tax money going out the window.

Yes, to a degree, I do agree with you. Although some people's definition of 'luxuries' are different than other peoples, it is absurd to see people standing in line at the WIC office or picking up their food stamps while their 2009 Escalade is in the parking lot.

Some items are a necessity for some people though. Like the cell phone if they travel for work or the internet if they are going to school online. I try not to pretend like I know people's situations. Having a few materialistic possessions doesn't necessarily mean they don't deserve a little assistance. Or making mistakes with their credit card usage doesn't mean I don't feel like they could use just a little help to get them back on track again. Its just the people who down right abuse it that really gets my goat.

it's those peoples' fault. personally, if I needed assistance and I had a lot of luxuries like a boat, a nice car, etc., I'd use that to help myself. I don't see how buying expensive things is necessary when you can't even afford food. I'm proud, and I don't like asking for help. I never go on vacation or buy new things really (partly because I like recycling, but also because of the money). I can go without a lot of things. I have a working car and that's about it. I do have a cell phone and internet access, but I'd get rid of these too if I needed to.

the kind of people you're talking about are greedy, to put it plainly. that's their problem though and the issue that I have is that it'd be too hard to regulate things like that.
